Tiresias is the first one to reveal a big piece of the puzzle to Oedipus, he speaks first of his parents, and then in a fit of rage reveals that the person to kill Liaos was actually Oedipus. The polarity between Tiresias and Oedipus can be most accurately seen at the end of the play, for Sophocles’ has made Oedipus into a crude version of the prophet. Oedipus is now blind too, yet his disability is derived from his own hand, and is a consequence of the atrocities he has seen, unlike the beauty Tiresias saw. Tiresias and Oedipus banter back and forth. Tiresias tells Oedipus that he won’t say anything, Oedipus responds very abruptly and says “You helped hatch the plot, you did the work, yes, short of killing him with your own hands-and given eyes I’d say you did the killing single-handed” (Sophocles 394-397). 2011-08-30 Oedipus and Teiresias 107 after the two men have become angry. He resorts to name-calling. Tiresias knows who Oedipus’ parents are, and he knows that the revelation of Oedipus’ genealogy will cause the foundations of Oedipus’ identity to crumble, simultaneously destroying one man and causing another man to come into being. As he states in line 438: “This day shall give you birth and destroy you. Tiresias, in Greek mythology, a blind Theban seer, the son of one of Athena ’s favourites, the nymph Chariclo. Tiresias plays a key role in the reversal of Oedipus’ fate in Oedipus Rex, but his role in Antigone has less of an impact.
